{"id":446,"date":"2023-06-04T01:35:57","date_gmt":"2023-06-04T01:35:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.icehockey.gr\/?page_id=446"},"modified":"2023-07-21T00:10:49","modified_gmt":"2023-07-21T00:10:49","slug":"heritage-team","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.icehockey.gr\/index.php\/heritage-team\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Greek Heritage Ice Hockey team?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">As many have reached out with questions about this team, we decided to clarify a few things in order avoid confusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">So, what is the Greek Heritage Team?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">This is a team comprised of players from the Hellenic diaspora. They are not the official Greek National team, as players with dual-citizenship need to follow strict International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) rules in order to play. This has nothing to do with Greek Sports rules but rather with the IIHF, which is the governing body of Ice Hockey Worldwide, and enforces its rules on all countries and all players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">According to these rules, when a player with dual-citizenship wants to play for the National team of their &#8220;second&#8221; country (in this case Greece) then they need to prove that they have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">transferred from their old team (in Canada, US or elsewhere) to a Greek team<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">have participated for at least two consecutive years in the Greek Ice Hockey League<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-medium-font-size\">been a resident of Greece during those same two years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Another requirement is to have an operational regular-sized rink in Greece, which unfortunately we do not have at the moment and therefore IIHF participation is not possible. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Despite this team not being the Official National Team of Greece, we wish them success and are extremely appreciative that they are creating awareness about Ice Hockey in Greece, with the ultimate goal being to open a regular size rink and to re-enter Greece in IIHF competition. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">If an ice rink eventually opens, we hope that all these players participating in the Heritage team will move to Greece and be part of the Greek Ice Hockey Community, transfer to Greek hockey teams and play in the Greek Ice Hockey League with the local Greek players. This way they will become eligible to play for the Official National Team while also helping strengthen the domestic league and the local talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Our hope is that next time the Winter Sports Federation decides to put together a team, maybe the IIHF Development Cup, it will be comprised of eligible players that either live, have lived or learned hockey in Greece. The 3-on-3 tournament organized every year proves that the local talent exists and is quite good! Also, we hope that the funds generated by the sale of jerseys and other merchandise in the name of Ice Hockey in Greece will actually get their way to the Ice Hockey players in Greece and not get &#8220;lost&#8221; during the transfer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">Nonetheless, we wish this team <strong>GOOD LUCK<\/strong> in the upcoming LATAM games and potential future games where the IIHF rules are not being enforced. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\">We will be watching and cheering! \u0396\u03ae\u03c4\u03c9
