15/04/2010 - HELLAS - Ireland 1 : 3

Day 2 and disappointment for the Greek Squad as they fell to Ireland 1-3 in a well played, strategic match.

The Greeks struck quickly in the 1st period with a brilliant power play strike with a 5 on 3 man advantage. All 5 players touched the puck with crisp quick passes and in the end Dimitris Kalyvas scored the power play goal with assists from Nikos Papadopoulos and Orestis Tilios. The Greeks played text book defense and limited the Ireland squad’s scoring chances the rest of the period, which ended at 1-0 in favor of the Greeks.

The 2nd period brought more of the same good Greek defense. Most of Ireland’s shots were long distance and what few quality chances they had, Spiro Ploutsis in the goal turned away. However, a power play by Ireland at the 5 minute mark of the period got them tied which began the only 12 minutes of the game that the Greeks didn’t control the pace with their strategic play. Ireland scored an even strength goal shortly thereafter to make the score 1-2. Next, a very bad bounce, on a Greek power play, went Ireland’s way and they scored a shorthanded goal to make the score 1-3.

The Greeks regrouped and held firm the rest of the 2nd period and all of the 3rd period. A late flurry by the Greeks had Ireland on their heels, but unfortunately, they could not find the back of the net and the game ended with the final score Greece 1 – Ireland – 3.

Goals by: D. Kalyvas (1)
Assists by: N. Papadopoulos (1), Tilios (1)

MVP of the Game: Kyriakos Adamidis

In the other match: UAE – Luxembourg 2-3

14/04/2010 - HELLAS - United Arab Emirates 7:1

Opening Day for the 2010 IIHF Div III World Championships and the Greek National Ice Hockey Team earned a hard fought 7-1 victory over U.A.E.

The 1st period got off to a sluggish start for the team, no doubt due, in part, to the many trials and tribulations the team faced in Athens during its preparation period.

However, the Greek Team was able to strike twice in the 1st period with Goals by Ioannis Koufis and Georgios Kalyvas, while Spiro Ploutsis held firm in net allowing only one tally for U.A.E ending the 1st period 2-1. The Greeks regrouped during the 1st intermission and were able to control the majority of the play the rest of the way. Ploutsis shut the door the remainder of the game. Ioannis Koufis and Georgios Kalyvas completed Hat Tricks and Iasonas Pachos added one for the final 7-1 score.

Goals by: Koufis (3), G. Kalyvas (3), Pachos (1)
Assists by: D. Kalyvas (4), N. Papadopoulos (3) G. Kalyvas (1), Lembessis (1), Pachos (1).

MVP of the Game: Georgios Kalyvas

08/04/2010 - PROMOTING THE SPORT OF HOCKEY

The game between the National Men’s Ice Hockey Team and a top selection of players from ALBATROS and MADKOWS was concluded last night at the Athens Heart ice rink. It was a friendly game and therefore no score was kept. Nice clean hockey was played between both teams without dirty hits and of course no fighting. All players tried their best to promote their sport to the fans that had gathered to watch.

A team picture was taken at the end of the match and everyone wished GOOD LUCK to the National Team for the difficult journey that awaits them at the World Championship Div.III that start next Wednesday April 14th.

The National Team players will like to thank the players of ALBATROS and MAD KOWS, who didn’t hesitate to accept the invitation for a friendly game and to help the National Team in its preparation. They will also like to thank the fans that gathered to watch the game and support the National Team.

01/04/2010 - FRIENDLY GAME BEFORE THE WORLDS

The National Ice Hockey Team, a few days before departing for the World Championship Div.III of Luxembourg, will play a friendly game against the top selection of players from ALBATROS and MADKOWS on Wednesday April 7th 10 pm at the Athens Heart Ice Rink.

The friendly game will be the last test before the Worlds but also a farewell event before the team embarks on the difficult journey that awaits them.

26/03/2010 - PRACTICES CONTINUE...

The National Team is continuing it's preparation for the 2010 IIHF World Championships Div III that will be held in Luxembourg in April, despite the many problems that have occurred over the last six months.

The National Team Head coach, Igor Apostolids, has elevated the level of intensity at practices as the games draw near and he has also increased the confidence and optimism amongst the players that they can succeed despite the adversity this team has faced in its own country and the difficult games that await them in Luxembourg.

23/03/2010 - BECAUSE SOME PEOPLE FORGET...

Greek hockey - against all odds
Efforts by leaders like Kalyvas bring the Greek national team back to IIHF competitions.

If there was a gold medal awarded for perseverance and determination to overcome severe hardships, the national hockey team of Greece would be a richly deserving winner. The story of the players’ inspiring fight to keep their team together – and keep the sport of ice hockey alive in their homeland – has all the makings of a Hollywood film.

For most of the last fourteen years, the Greek team has persevered in the face of long odds. In the 1990s, the Greek government cut off all funding to the hockey program. Since 2003, Greece has been just one of one two European member countries without a viable hockey rink in the country.

Through it all, the Greek hockey players found ways to persevere. Under the leadership of team captain Dimitris Kalyvas, the players have gone to extraordinary lengths to stay together on and off the ice. The players pooled their own resources to continue playing, even self-funding trips to practice and play in the Czech Republic. All the while, they lobbied anyone who would listen about the need for a rink in their country. The team also applied to the IIHF for permission to compete internationally for the first time since 1999. The players’ tireless efforts have paid off.

The Greek government has approved construction of a rink and the team now receives funding from the Hellenic Ice Sports Federation. In September, at the IIHF’s semi-annual congress in Vancouver, the Greek national team received approval to participate in the 2008 Division III World Championship qualification tournament taking place in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, from February 15-17, 2008.

Best of all, the sport of hockey has not only managed to survive in Greece through the trials and tribulations. It has actually grown. “All these years, there has been an increase in the number of players,” said Kalyvas. “We have six teams that play inline hockey in Greece since there is no ice rink yet, or travel to Bulgaria to play games against other. Most of the teams have their own websites. And the national team continues to travel to the Czech Republic to prepare for the World Championship qualifications.”

Throughout the entire process, Kalyvas and the other team members have drawn inspiration from an unlikely source: turn of the 20th Century African-American political leader, educator and author Booker T. Washington. A quote from Washington adorns the front page of Team Greece’s website: “You measure the size of an accomplishment by the obstacles you had to overcome to reach your goals.”

2/2/2009 - THE DREAM THAT BECAME A NIGHTMARE

The 2010 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS of Athens OFFICIALLY CANCELLED

AfAfter various accusations that started a few days after the October elections in Greece from Aggelos Aliferis (ex-responsible of Ice Hockey of the Hellenic Ice Sports Federation) and the denial of the Minister of Sports, Panos Bisaksis to fund the World Championships as he had obligation to do so, and despite the efforts of Dimitris Kalyvas, Kostas Lembessis, Panagiotis Iatridis and Giotis Efkarpidis with the support of the whole National Team, the International Ice Hockey Federation decided yesterday February 1st to officially cancel the 2010 World Championship Div. III of Athens.

The National Team Players are singing the National anthem after qualifying for the 2008 World Championships which contributed in the opening of an ice rink in Athens after almost 6 years and a Greek Championship after 8.

A great video showing the passion and love these athletes have for their country. Hopefully the Greek Ministry of Sports feels the same way and decides to fund the World Championship of Athens.

21/01/2010 - IN SEARCH OF SPONSORS AND VOLUNTEERS

In search of Sponsors and Volunteers, for the World championship in Athens

After receiving a negative response from the General Secretary of Sports declining any financial responsibility and organizational support of hosting the Games in Athens Greece from 13.04.2010 up until 17.04.2010, the president of the ice sports federation Christos Chatziathanassiou met on Sunday 17/01 with the captain of the National Team Dimitris Kalyvas, along with the 2008 and 2009 coach Panagiotis Efkarpidis and two National team players Costas Lembessis and Panagiotis Iatridis. In this meeting it was decided that they would combine forces and organize the Div. ÉÉÉ World championship Group A, on their own. This of course would be the first time in history where the players which will also be on the Roster are organizing the whole event, but then again…..in Greece everything is possible!

The most important thing right now and priority number one, is to find SPONSORS to help fund the championship, because without sponsors the championship will have to be cancelled. Therefore if you are interested in sponsoring this championship and help keep the Ice Hockey dream alive in Greece, along with the development opportunities such an event would have, then please contact us at: sponsors@icehockey.gr or phone us at: 00306974956673 or 00302106849324.

There are many different types of Sponsor packages which can best suit all interests.
Please note that the media sponsor of the games is ERT (Greek Television) which will cover the whole championship.

We are also in great need of VOLUNTEERS in order to help with the organization of the championship and also for during the games. All the athletes from the National team invite you to come and help in any way possible, if you are interested in helping please either us at volunteers@icehockey.gr or contact Gioti Efkarpidi at 0030 6977640825.
Very soon we will post a date and place, where a meeting will be held regarding the volunteers and dividing tasks and functions.

The opening ceremonies of the championship are right around the corner, 13.04.2010 to be exact, therefore time is of the essence, so little time, so much to do. We look forward to hearing from you very soon.

06/11/2009 - IIHF: 2009/2010 RULES CHANGE

The IIHF agreed to apply three new rule changes beginning on July 1, 2009. The three rulings include the following:

1) A team committing an icing infraction will not be allowed to change their players before the ensuing face-off in their defensive zone
2) The elimination of the imaginary lines for taking face-offs, making all face-offs held using the 9 face-off dots on the ice surface
3) When a team is assessed a penalty in the offensive zone, the ensuing face-off will be held in their defensive zone

The Congress has applied these new rulings to all IIHF competitions beginning on July 1, 2009 and will do so throughout the 2009-10 season. This includes IIHF club competitions, the IIHF Championship Program and in both the men’s and the women’s tournaments at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

25/10/2009 - IIHF - PROPOSAL: IIHF Championship format changes

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) sent its proposal for the World Championship format changes. The 2 most important changes are:

1) There will now be 5 Divisions instead of 3
2) The lower ranked divisions (3, 4 and 5) will be held every second year instead of every year.

Many lower ranked countries, including Greece, have protested these changes and believe that it will not help in the long term development of the sport. Taking Greece as an example, the great results of the Men's National Team in the past couple of years has helped with the development and promotion of Ice Hockey in the country. Despite not having any International Competition in more than 10 years and not having a proper ice rink, the National Team qualified for the 2008 Div.III World Championships in February 2008, easily beating Bosnia 10-1 and then beating tournament favorites Armenia 8-5.
At the Div. III Worlds in Luxembourg in April 2008 Greece finished in 5th place taking eventual Bronze medalist Luxembourg to overtime before losing in a shootout.
At the Div. III Worlds in New Zealand in April 2009 Greece finished in 4th, with three outstanding performances, beating Ireland 7-3, taking eventual Gold medal winner New Zealand to overtime before losing 4-3 and fighting valiantly for two periods against Turkey for a winner take all Div. II promotion before finally succumbing in the final period.

The success of the Greek National Team gave the Hellenic Ice Sports Federation (HISF) the leverage to request further funding for the sport. The HISF managed to secure an amount for the development and the opening of an Ice Rink after almost 5 years of not having a single proper ice rink in all of Greece. As such, Greece was able to conduct a regular season and declare a country champion two years in a row. Further, the fact that the 2010 Div. III Championship will be hosted by Greece in April 2010 is a clear indication of the importance of ANNUAL participation of National teams at a World Championship in order to keep the momentum of the interest of the sport of Ice Hockey in Greece (and other lower ranked countries) and to support the efforts for the continued long term development of the sport. It is only with ANNUAL participation, that the NEXT generation of players, the YOUTH, can learn the game and dream of representing their country on the World stage.

All this would not have been possible if it wasn’t for the consecutive participation and the success of the Men’s National Team and any change in the format will only have negative results.
